Data Engineer

At New Black, we are revolutionizing the world of Contextual Commerce with EVA, our cutting-edge platform. As we continue to expand and enhance EVA, we’re looking to expand our team with a Data Engineer who can help us elevate how we ingest, process, and activate data across the company.

As our Data Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and maintaining the data backbone of our platform - ensuring scalable, secure, and efficient data flows that power decisions, insights, and innovation across New Black.

About New Black

We are just a bunch of NERDS, transforming the world of (e)commerce with our truly unique Contextual Commerce platform, called EVA. Our purpose is to help globally operating brands and retailers to become adaptive to change. EVA is the engine that powers digital retail solutions, a secure, cloud-based platform that is setup to improve the consumer experience. We facilitate flexible infrastructure, enable digital transformation, and help our customers deliver a true unified experience and functionality to their customers faster and smarter. We work for leading brands and retailers such as Dyson, Rituals, AFC Ajax, G-Star, Kiko Milano, and others.

Our philosophy

New Black, is a company like no other. That is a promise. We believe that work is about more than getting paid for your effort. We have implemented holacracy in our company and we cut the crap so you don't have to report to a manager. We align with each other, but we don't report in one direction. It helps us to be faster and more adaptive to change. But we don’t take it easy. We work hard and the next thing’s always lined up; we don’t take our success for granted.

New Black is more than a software company; we are a next-generation platform transforming the world of (e)commerce, a company full of passionate people who love what we do and how we do it.

New Black is very ambitious; we are profitable and fully bootstrapped (no investors, no debts). This is incredibly important in providing us the freedom to shape our company the way we see fit.

New Black wholly owns its intellectual property; this allows us to make our own decisions about our products and provides us with the freedom to create the best product with the latest technology.

New Black has entered selective strategic partnerships with best-in-class global brands like Apple, Microsoft, Adyen, Deloitte to create an ecosystem for global expansion and sustainable success.

About your role

As a Data Engineer at New Black, you’ll be at the core of our technical infrastructure - implementing and optimizing data pipelines that move and transform data across our platform. You’ll work with technologies like Spark, PySpark, Databricks, and Azure Data Services to build flows that support everything from business intelligence and reporting to real-time analytics and product performance monitoring. This role is hands-on and impact-heavy: you'll be expected to not just build, but also identify opportunities to improve architecture, fix inefficiencies, and scale data access across teams.

You’ll apply modern data modeling practices to both structured and unstructured data, ensure strong governance and compliance, and support data use cases across analytics, customer reporting, and internal product insights. From anomaly detection systems and dashboard automation to shaping platform performance metrics - you’ll help set the standard for how we work with data. As our data ecosystem grows, your work will enable more informed decisions, faster iteration, and stronger outcomes across the business.

What You Bring

We are specifically looking for a Nerd that already has the following skills.

Technical expertise:

  • Proven experience designing and implementing scalable data architectures in cloud environments

  • Experience integrating with BI tools such as Power BI
  • Familiarity with data security, compliance, reliability, and test-driven development
  • Owns job orchestration: scheduled + table-update-triggered jobs, task chaining, and failure-mode handling (defer vs. crash).

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with hybrid Postgres + Lakehouse data platforms, keeping hot-path and cold-store in sync.
  • Writes PySpark transforms that materialize business rules as queryable tables.
  • Engineers reliable async integrations to external systems via intent-queue drains with idempotency in mind.
  • Codifies infrastructure as code: Databricks Asset Bundles for jobs, azd/Bicep for the API, Alembic for schema.

  • Analytical and solutions-oriented, able to troubleshoot and move fast
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally and translating business needs into scalable solutions
  • Unafraid to speak up, ask the tough questions, and share new ideas
