Legal Intern

At New Black, we are revolutionizing the world of Contextual Commerce with EVA, our cutting-edge platform. As we grow, so does the legal side of the business, the contracts we sign, the data we handle, and the international rules we operate under. We're looking for a Legal Intern who wants to get hands-on with real commercial, data, and international legal work in a fast-moving tech company.

As our Legal Intern, you'll work alongside our people and operations team on the agreements and legal frameworks that keep EVA running, from commercial contracts and data processing agreements to the cybersecurity and cross-border questions that come with serving global brands.

About New Black

We are just a bunch of NERDS, transforming the world of (e)commerce with our truly unique Contextual Commerce platform, called EVA. Our purpose is to help globally operating brands and retailers to become adaptive to change. EVA is the engine that powers digital retail solutions, a secure, cloud-based platform that is setup to improve the consumer experience. We facilitate flexible infrastructure, enable digital transformation, and help our customers deliver a true unified experience and functionality to their customers faster and smarter. We work for leading brands and retailers such as Rituals, AFC Ajax, G-Star, Kiko Milano, and others.

Our philosophy

New Black, is a company like no other. That is a promise. We believe that work is about more than getting paid for your effort. We have implemented holacracy in our company and we cut the crap so you don't have to report to a manager. We align with each other, but we don't report in one direction. It helps us to be faster and more adaptive to change. But we don’t take it easy. We work hard and the next thing’s always lined up; we don’t take our success for granted.

New Black is more than a software company; we are a next-generation platform transforming the world of (e)commerce, a company full of passionate people who love what we do and how we do it.

New Black is very ambitious; we are profitable and fully bootstrapped (no investors, no debts). This is incredibly important in providing us the freedom to shape our company the way we see fit.

New Black wholly owns its intellectual property; this allows us to make our own decisions about our products and provides us with the freedom to create the best product with the latest technology.

New Black has entered selective strategic partnerships with best-in-class global brands like Apple, Microsoft, Adyen, Deloitte to create an ecosystem for global expansion and sustainable success.

About your role

As a Legal Intern at New Black, you won't be filing paperwork in a back office, you'll be close to the legal work that actually moves the company forward. Your central project is helping us restructure our contracting framework and standardize the agreements we use across customers and partners, so that every deal starts from a solid, consistent foundation. Alongside that, you'll help review and draft commercial agreements, support our contracting process, and dig into the legal questions that come with running a secure, cloud-based platform across borders.

Day to day, framework work will look like this: mapping the contracts and clauses we use today, building and maintaining a clause library of standard, reusable provisions, developing template agreements and playbooks for recurring deal types (customer contracts, partner and reseller agreements, NDAs, and data processing agreements), setting up a contract register so we always know what we've signed and when it renews, and flagging where our current agreements are inconsistent, outdated, or missing key protections.

Your work will sit at the intersection of three areas:

  • contract law (customer agreements, supplier contracts, NDAs, and the clauses that make them hold up)
  • data and cybersecurity law (GDPR, data processing agreements, and how we protect the data our customers trust us with)
  • international law (the cross-border and jurisdictional questions that come with serving global brands from the Netherlands).

Across all three, you'll research, summarize, draft, and flag, turning dense legal questions into clear, usable answers and feeding what you learn back into the standard templates and clause library. It's a role where you'll learn by doing, with real responsibility and real feedback, and where the framework you help build will outlast your internship.

What You Bring

We are looking for a Nerd in the making, someone with the foundation and the curiosity to grow fast.

Relevant background:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's law programme (this is a requirement, you must be a registered student for the duration of the internship)
  • A focus, or genuine interest, in commercial/contract law, data protection law, or international law
  • Comfortable reading and interpreting contracts and legal texts, and translating them into plain language
  • Familiarity with GDPR and EU data protection principles is a strong plus
  • Strong written English;

Bonus points for:

  • Interest in the tech, SaaS, or retail sector
  • Exposure to cybersecurity, information security, or data governance concepts
  • Experience with cross-border or international commercial matters
  • A knack for organizing and structuring information (contract registers, clause libraries, that kind of thing)

Mindset:

  • Proactive and curious, you go and find the answer instead of waiting for it
  • Precise and detail-oriented, but able to see the bigger picture
  • Comfortable asking questions and admitting what you don't know yet
  • Unafraid to speak up, share ideas, and take ownership of your work

What We Offer

  • An amazing passionate team with talented people, who really love what they do and how they do it.
  • A company like no other; New Black really takes care of you. We hire with the intention to keep you!
  • To be your own boss, for we don’t have a hierarchy but implemented an holacratic way of working. Everyone is equal.
  • State of the art equipment for your home office (AirPods, Macbook etc.), and many amazing perks which will reflect your effort and input.
  • Determine your own working hours and days. Determine your own working location.
  • Our own chef who prepares amazing lunches for you in the office.
  • To be part of something great, not just a job, but a movement in Retail IT landscape. This is a company where everyone works with passion, and they are the best in what they do.

We are changing the future of retail worldwide, and we invite you to be part of it. Apply because you’ve got the motivation to change the game of global retail and the skills to back it up.
